About this objectThe main title is a pun- the olive branch which the Empress is looking at so wistfully is a reference to Emile Ollivier (1825-1913).
He was appointed first minister in January 1870. Eugenie’s alleged romance with him does not seem to have any foundation.
The sub-title Badinguet refers to the Emperor’s nickname, taken from that of a worker whose identity he assumed when escaping from imprisonment at the Fortress of Ham in 1846.
