Camden Place’s historic importance is something that we are continuing to research and understand. With stories of a double murder, royal visitors and spies, there is plenty to dig into. Here are some of the key historic events we have already uncovered.

Benjamin Franklin's Visit - 1760

Discussions about taxation between the American colonists and Britain was a hot topic in the 1760’s.

Royal Visits - 1855

1855 marked an important development in Anglo-French relations with two official state visits. These established a life long friendship between the two families.

The Sham Fight - 1860

In 1860 there was growing concern about the overseas ambitions that France might have. To prepare for any possible invasion thousands of volunteers participated in a sham fight on the grounds of Camden Place.

Napoleon III's Funeral - 1873

It is reported that hundreds of thousands came to pay their respects to France’s last Emperor. It was a royal funeral in all but name because the political implication and ongoing relationship with the French Government had to be considered.

The Prince Imperial's Funeral - 1879

Even more people came to pay their respects to this young exiled Prince who died in British uniform.

Eugenie's Pilgrimage to South Africa - 1880

Just one year after the Prince’s death in the Zulu War Eugenie bravely spent six weeks following his last days and spending the anniversary of his death at the spot where he died.

Becoming a Golf Club - 1894

In 1894, Chislehurst Golf Club was created

War damage to property

War Damage - 1944

An incendiary bomb did considerable damage to the house. Fire, water and then dry rot nearly led to the loss of the dining room panelling.
