About this objectThis is probably the most famous image to emerge from the period of the Prussian siege of Paris (19th September - 28th January 1871). It shows a very long line of Parisians on their hands and knees, waiting for a rat to emerge from the sewers into the gutter. Rats are indeed consumed although they need very rich sauces to make them edible.
