About this objectPrinted copy of a telegram sent by the minister of War, General of Algeria, to be distributed to the French people.
This terse but devastating bulletin, sent from Paris at 10.25am on 3 September, breaks the news to the French people that their armed forces had capitulated and the Emperor had been taken prisoner. It further notes that Paris is in a state of defense, the nation's military forces are organising and new armies will be formed. "Your patriotism, your unity, your energy will save France". Both signatories of the bulletin were rapidly overwhelmed by events and were no longer in office by the end of the following day (4 September 1870) when the Second Empire collapsed. Chevreau was an ultra loyal Bonaparte and followed the Imperial Family into exile, where he was a frequent visitor to Camden Place
