About this objectDr Thomas Evans (1823 -1897) was an American dentist who devoted much of his life to serving the people of France, most notably during the second Empire and the difficult times during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871).
He is best known for his outstanding efforts in saving and protecting the Empress Eugenie, when he escorted her from Paris to the Channel coast at Deauville in September 1870.
He accompanied her to England and played a key role in identifying Camden Place as an ideal residence for the Imperial family. A friend of Napoleon lll's he would have been well known to Nathaniel Strode but that connection was probably never shared with the Empress.
He accompanied the Empress and the Prince Imperial and a small number of courtiers to Chislehurst on 24th September 1870. He stayed until 8th October, when he departed for Wilhelmshole to see the Emperor, then in captivity.
Dr Evans continued to be a regular guest at both Camden Place and Farnborough Hill until he died in 1897.
This document concentrates on his good works and philanthropy at the time of the Franco -Prussian War and outlines all that he did to help ordinary people in difficult times. As a result the 'Societe Nationale d'encouragement au bien is awarding Dr Evans its medal of honour.
