Name/TitleVanity Fair: Emille Ollivier
Men of the Day No 3 _The Parliamentary Empire'
About this objectCaricature of Emile Ollivier (1825-1913). Ollivier began his career as a lawyer, called to the bar at just 23. The 1848 revolution provided an opening into government administration (his father was a staunch republican) but the fall of the Republic via Louis Napoleon's coup led him back to the legal profession. He only returned to political life in 1857, when he was elected one of just five republican deputies (Les Cinq) who openly opposed the Emperor Napoleon.
However Ollivier was always a moderate republican and he was prepared to work with the regime if it led to constitutional concessions. By 1866-67 he had moved away from his former republican colleagues to form a new grouping of deputies prepared to support the idea of a 'liberal Empire'.
