Discover Camden Place’s unique history through the people and events that shaped a story that spans more than 400 years.

From 1609, when the antiquarian William Camden first set up home on the site, to its role today as the home of Chislehurst Golf Club. Over the years Camden Place has played host to famous visitors, been the scene of a double murder and witnessed the death of the last Emperor of the French.

We have recently hosted expert talks on Carte de Visites and on Stereoscopic Photography,  heard about Napoleon’s failed plan for Mexico from author Ed Shawcross and on the Life of the Prince Imperial by historian Ian Sygrave.

The house is a delight, particularly to those interested in Georgian architecture or the influence of French design on English style.

Camden Place’s history starts in 1607, when it was built as an impressive home for the antiquarian William Camden. Subsequent residents rebuilt, extended and recast the building from country house to French chateau.

Camden Place is of historic and architectural significance. From antiquarian William Camden to the last Emperor of the French, its residents provided a fascinating glimpse of the history and politics of their time. A double murder and secret doors keep visitors of all ages intrigued and entertained.

By public transport

Chislehurst railway station is about a 15 minute walk. Turn right out of the station and then left up the hill. Camden Parl Rd is on the left at the top of the hill. Chislehurst Golf Club and Camden Place is on the right at the top of the road. There is a frequent bus service up the hill and a pedestrian gate to the property.

From M25 – take Junction 3 (A20) towards Sidcup. Take A222 to Bromley after about two miles. Proceed for just over a mile and go straight across at the traffic lights. At a mini roundabout after a further half mile, turn right into Camden Park Road and then right again, after 30 yards, into the Club’s driveway.

From Bromley – take the A222. The Club is approximately four miles from Bromley. After passing Chislehurst Station on your left, proceed up Summer Hill and, at the mini roundabout, turn left into Camden Park Road. After 30 yards, turn right into the Club’s driveway.

There is carparking at the club. If you approach the gates to Chislehurst Golf Club, they will automatically open. Note that the entrance to the Club and Camden Place is on the right at the top of Camden Park Road. The white bar gates a little further down the road are for the private road only.
