The house is a delight, particularly for those interested in Georgian architecture or the nineteenth century influence of French design on English style.

The building is clearly of great architectural importance as we continue to research and understand it.
Camden Place’s history starts in 1609, when the antiquarian William Camden built a modest home on the site.
In 1860, the 127-acre Camden Estate was purchased by Nathaniel Strode, a lawyer and ‘fixer’ who had known Napoleon lll since the 1840s. Strode began to recast Camden House as a French Chateau, lowering windows and adding balconies and balustrades and magnificent gates taken from the Paris Exposition of 1867.
Inside, a new dining wing was added, complete with imported panelling that had originally been created by the finest French craftsmen who then went on to work on Versailles. This room has been described by the experts as ‘possibly the best French interior in England’.
The members of Chislehurst Golf Club are the current residents (and custodians) of the magnificent Camden Place - the longest serving tenants in the history of the property. They are committed to finding ways to invest in the preservation of Camden Place and have identified a number of vital conservation projects to be undertaken over the coming years.
Discover Camden Place’s unique history through the people and events that shaped its story that spans more than 400 years.
